My Mom has been here for 4 years. We have had a wonderful experience overall. Homey and comfortable! We did experience a few bumps during the transition. ( Expected for the most part with all the changes) Staff definitely made it better as we transitioned! Absolutely things have turned back around and we have had support and care from all staff during this time. Activities are amazing and the facility it beautiful. We couldn't be happier with how well our Mom has done and is doing here. She was in 3 other facilities prior to this in the last 7 years. By far she has excelled here and is the happiest she has been in years. 💗 Here at Cortland. We would definitely recommend 💯

My Grandma and Grandpa was staying in there memory area because my Grandpa has dementia. For the most part the rooms are nice and it is a comfortable environment, but if you are allergic to any foods, do not go here. Even though the culinary people have been told many times my Grandma is allergic to certain foods, they still serve her these foods and do not care that it could kill her. Lawsuit of wrongful death waiting to happen for somebody and they do not care. On top of this the food is ALWAYS cold, so my Grandma had to take EVERY MEAL to the MICROWAVE to just have it luke warm. Ever had eggs that were microwaved after being "cooked" the same day? It is gross.

I’m going to try one last time to leave a review and have it stay up rather than be deleted. I would like to make it known that many of the caregivers and direct care workers (med techs, housekeeping, etc) were absolutely WONDERFUL. This review goes well beyond that, and is a criticism of those at a higher level, who are running the place. My grandma stayed here for years and years. When they transitioned to The Cortland from Vista Springs, things went way downhill (again, from a higher level, we had great experiences with many of the workers). Staffing was inadequate, often only one person for dozens of people. I’d stay with my grandma often and no one would check on her overnight. TONS of miscommunication regarding meds, which led to missed doses and confusion regarding what my grandmother was getting and what she shouldn’t get, getting doses of “as needed” meds we asked them to discontinue. They are so short staffed (why wouldn’t they be? Many of their workers are made to do double shifts or work 16 hours because they’re good workers, which leads to a lot of turnover), which led to my grandma being left alone for WAY too long without being checked on. She experienced a lot of falls, and sometimes we didn’t know when she had even fallen or how long she’d been on the floor. Again, the workers who knew her and knew to check on her always were diligent. But if they didn’t know her well, they never checked on her and she’d often fall or her clothes would go unchanged or she wouldn’t have anyone to help her go to the bathroom. No call buttons in the back unit, and I begged to install a camera so that I could monitor my grandmother for falls myself, but I guess that is against policy. So when my grandma needed help, there was often just no one around to check on her if they didn’t know her well and know to check on her often to help her with bathroom trips or checks to see if she had fallen. I expressed concerns often and was usually dismissed or told things were being taken care of. I ended up having to stay with my grandma basically 24/7 toward the end of her life to ensure that management was doing their part to make sure things were actually getting done. It was absolutely insane to me that the third shift workers NEVER checked on her overnight, even in her last week of life. The med techs would come administer medication to check on her, but I couldn’t find any workers to come check on her even though they’re supposed to every hour. Again, not their fault, but likely because there’s usually only 1-2 caregivers on the floor for third shift, so they physically cannot check on dozens of people all by themselves. Overall, many of the caregivers and workers gave my grandma adequate and exceptional care if they knew her and cared about her, but on a broader level and higher level it was just not adequate and led to a lot of suffering for my grandmother that didn’t need to happen. Thank you to the caregivers who made my grandma so happy while she was there. She loved them so much. The corporate employees need to do better to ensure each and every resident is not getting neglected and is being treated with respect and dignity, by everyone.
