Astor house has been a godsend for my mother. I can sleep at night knowing she is safe and cared for. She has kept her independence and is able to focus on living rather then worrying about cleaning up or making meals. She goes on outings to local stores, has transportation to many of her appointments, and really enjoys working puzzles with her friends. Moving to Astor House has also improved her mood. She always has someone else to talk too and reasons to get up in the morning. This has really been a good place for her.

The absolute worst place to move anyone that is elderly that you love. The administration will get on the microphone while they are suppose to be enjoying the slop that they call meals and calls the residents "THRASHY" because they missed the trashcan with a paper towel in the bathroom. Constantly run out of food that they have on a menu that they plan. Serve dry sandwiches with crumbled chips and wilted lettuce. They offer light housekeeping which never comes, dirty coffee station with dust and disgusting coffee spills on it. Non working fire alarms. This place should be ashamed of themselves. Will hound you for money when your loved one doesn't die within 30 days of a 30 day notice. I do not recommend this place and if there was a lower score than one star I would give them that.

Astor House is a nice-looking environment and with people working there. Sometimes there are not enough people to serve at meal time and meals can take a long time to come out of the kitchen. The food could be better oriented toward seniors, having less red meat and more whole grains. The communication systems are wanting. Loudspeakers in the hallways are used and many residents have trouble understanding what's being said. It's a much noisier street than a first time visitor would think because it's a residential area but loud cars are allowed to broadcast their loud pipes through the area. So, although it calls itself an "Independent Living" place, you don't control the noise or the food quality or pace of food service. Astor House needs a system whereby it can count the number of meals a resident takes advantage of or otherwise adjust the monthly cost for residents who only come down half the time or some other percentage.

Extremely quiet; close to vendors; largely older women who obviously enjoy the commaraderie but who, for the most part, been friendly with me.
