Imagine being unable to get out of bed without assistance and being left in bed without a call button you can reach, for hours, being left unattended in the bathroom when you can't get up yourself, having a room with inadequate heat in the cold of winter and being promised that it would be addressed but nothing changed. Then being released from therapy to home with the understanding that you were basically able to care for yourself when in actuality you needed a constant caregiver. The food is great, some of the staff are wonderful, but there are some real shortfalls and a lot seems to fall through the cracks.

My wife Peg had a stroke 16 years ago. For years, with help, we could function some, but over time and when we were in our 80's we saw the advantage of moving to an Independent senior living facility. After comparing a few facilities, we chose Riverwoods in Lewisburg, PA. Now that we have lived here for a year and a half, we learned there is much more here than Personal care, Special Needs and a Nursing Facility. Here at Riverwoods, they have multiple level of cares to assist the residents. The activities are not just for the handicapped, there are areas with gym equipment, a craft studio to make things, area where people get together to play card games and put puzzles together. There is a pool table, ping pong table, swimming pool, brain health session, and a fitness center where exercise classes are held. Plus, other entertainment and activities such as movies, bible studies, and church services on Sundays. Everyone here is so friendly; it is like family. I've worn Hawaiian shirts for years and never got more attention from people than I do here at Riverwoods! I'm told I look like I'm on vacation. I tell them, " I feel like I'm on vacation! I don't have to mow grass, trim trees in the summer or shovel snow in the winter" When going to dinner and there are empty seats, folks will say, " care to join us?" So, so friendly. Our restaurant has a large menu so if you don't care for the special of the day, there is a lot to choose from and dinning staffs are friendly. We are happy that we don't have to cook anymore!

The overall management of RiverWoods as greatly improved in the past three years making it a wise choice for senior living in Central Pennsylvania. In addition to an excellent wellness program of classes in the gym and pool there personal attention to individual's strengths and needs for improvement. For a small additional monthly fee Independent Living resident can participate in a brain health program that begins with an evaluation of individual needs and the many various activities to address those needs. My favorite is hydro-cycling.

Be aware that the facility does not allow wheelchairs for mobility regardless of the an individuals ability to be independent in their activities of daily living, transfers, and mobility within the building. This would require placement in a higher level of care. A really deal breaker.
